The PowerLock Manual describes all the features of PowerLock and details how to install it effectively for your particular system. It is strongly recommended that you READ THE MANUAL.

What is PowerLock? PowerLock is the "front door" to your Macintosh. It is an easy to use start up application that can be completely configured and customised to suit
your own personal needs. It helps prevent unauthorised people from using your Macintosh.
UPDATING FROM POWERLOCK 3.1: (skip to Installing PowerLock if you're a new user)
To update PowerLock, simply replace all files with those in this archive. There's no need to replace or remove your Preferences file as all changes are automatically made by PowerLock itself.
A few things to be aware of in the update process:
1. All PowerUsers settings will be lost. (Sorry!) This is necessary as PowerUsers
now stores information about file locations in a new and much more reliable
format.
2. The Preferences file is converted to a new format. You may need to adjust some
Preferences after the conversion. Also, the restriction on some features will
be set (and removed when you record your registration information). See the
manual for more information on the temporary restrictions.
3. Any broadcast PowerMessage won't be displayed until a new broadcast message
is entered.
4. You will need to go to the Preferences dialog to access the Installation Assistant
and install the new tools (or install them manually if you prefer).
IF YOU'RE CURRENTLY USING BOOTBLOCKS MODIFICATION OR FINDER RENAME:
You might like to investigate the new StartUp Launcher. It gives equivalent
protection and is much easier to install, remove and setup.
INSTALLING POWERLOCK
First up, be sure to take a copy of PowerLock before you install it, just in case!. Now place PowerLock into a separate folder on your hard disk.
PowerLock includes an Installation Assistant to get you going as quickly and easily as possible.
System 7 users - please follow these instructions:
1. Start PowerLock
2. Click Auto-Install
3. Select Normal security.
4. Click Install
5. Now change your password, and PowerLock is installed.
System 6 users - please follow these instructions:
1. Start PowerLock, but make sure to hold down the Option key when launching it
until you hear a sound. This lets PowerLock know that you’ve read the instructions
and also sets the default password to 'PowerLock'.
2. Select Normal security, or if available to you, Full security.
3. Click Install
4. If you chose Full Security, that's all there is to it. However, Normal Security
requires a few extra steps:
5. You’ll see a message explaining what to do next. Take note of the message, then
click OK. PowerLock will now quit. Here are the details of what to do next:
6. Select the PowerLock icon by single-clicking.
7. Choose "Set Startup..." from the Special menu.
8. Make sure the button labelled “PowerLock” is selected.
9. Click OK.
10. Restart your Macintosh.
PowerLock uses the default password of "PowerLock" and it is case-sensitive. When you enter it, you'll be taken to the "Change Password" dialog. Follow the prompts to change the password to your preferred password.
System 7 users who wish to manually install PowerLock should read the appendix in the Manual for full details.
LICENCE INFORMATION
Full details of PowerLock licencing and distribution arrangements can be found in the manual. In short, PowerLock is a combination of PostCardWare and ShareWare. You may use one copy at your home for the price of a Postcard. Some features are limited in unregistered versions. To use PowerLock at or on any other premises requires registration. The Registration Fee is US$25 with discounts available for not for profit educational institutions and employees, full time students, bulk purchases and payments made in Australian currency.
Distribution
You are welcome to distribute PowerLock to other individuals, bulletin boards, user group libraries etc. provided you do not charge any money for it, other than a reasonable charge for media & transport costs. PowerLock may be included in any collection of Shareware (either disk or CD-ROM based) provided it is distributed intact and the documentation (either online or otherwise) accompanying the distribution media explains the concept of Shareware. You may not sell PowerLock (on its own or with other products) without permission of the author.
